This specimen was lot 1361 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hamburg. 10 Marks, 1903-J. City arms. Reverse: Crowned eagle. NGC graded AU-58." Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of two imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen was the other. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany. This type was struck 1890-1913 while Hamburg was part of the Empire, the collapse of which ended the last local coinages. Proofs exist for some dates but not 1903.
