This specimen was lot 31143 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany. Lübeck. Free City gold Proof 10 Mark 1905-A PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Berlin mint. The first year for the "5-sided Shield" type, this standout 10 Mark offers the finest certified quality available for the type, with lightly textured devices that produce a pleasing contrast against the mirror fields surrounding. Even close inspection yields remarkably little in the way of distractions over the well-kept surfaces, resulting in a praiseworthy top-tier appeal that could, foreseeably, remain unchallenged. Ex. Caranett Collection." Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This gold ten mark superseded an earlier type of 1901 and 1904 with a slightly different obverse. This type was issued 1905-10 yet is rare. All of Lubeck's reform coinage was minted in Berlin.
