Hamburg 1906-J 10 mark
This specimen was lot 2746 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,032 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, HAMBURG Freie und Hansestadt. 10 Mark 1906. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Erworben am 7. März 2006 von O. Frank, Möglingen. (free city of Hamburg, ten mark of 1906. Choice example, about uncirculated.)"
Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of three imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen and Lübeck were the others. This type is common and was struck 1892-93, 1896-1914. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany.
