Great Britain 1986 1/2 sovereign
This specimen was part of lot 6643 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), which sold for $493.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1 & 1/2 Sovereign, 1986. PCGS PROOF-68 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. 2 pieces in lot. A matched pair of low denomination gold pieces. Both are fully brilliant with no detracting marks or breaks in the frosted devices." Sovereigns minted since 1937 were for collectors and bullion investors and not intended to circulate. This type was struck 1985-97 in some numbers (the peak mintage was 25,000 in 1985-86) but as it was sold at its gold value, it is unlikely any ever circulated as coin. Cleaned and damaged specimens are likely ex-jewelry.
Recorded mintage: 25,000.
Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.
