Great Britain (1638-39) shilling
The first specimen was lot 34785 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $382. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1638-39). Tower Mint. Charles I (1625-49). Toned. NEARLY EXTREMELY FINE. From the Demarete Collection." The second specimen was lot 3077 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[2] noted, "ENGLAND: Charles I, 1625-1649, AR shilling, ND (1638-9), fifth Aberystwyth-style bust, anchor mintmark, large bust, single-arched crown, large XII, Fine, ex Michael More Collection." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver, 30 mm diameter, the second specimen 5.61 g.
Catalog reference: S-2797; KM-110; North-2230-1, the second specimen is KM-109, S-2795.
