Stack's Bowers September 2025 ANA sale, lot 40372
SB825-40372r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40372 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $6,480. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lovely Nearly Mint State Unite With Handsome Luster. GREAT BRITAIN. Unite (20 Shillings), ND (1638-39). London Mint; mm: Anchor. Charles I. NGC AU-55. Quite an outstanding example of this type, with glowing brilliance in the protected areas of the design, clear full details, and charming eye appeal throughout. An example that desires serious consideration from any collector interested in hammered British coinage." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold. This type, struck 1625-42, is called the fourth bust in the SCWC; Skingley[2] says this is the fifth bust. This issue is dated to 1638-39 by the anchor mintmark.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 8.99 g.

Catalog reference: S-2692; N-2153; Fr-246; KM-154.1.
