Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52133
SB124-52133 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52133 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, ND (1638-42). Aberystwyth Mint; mm: Book. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, on horse trotting left; plumes to right; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms; plumes above. Despite some edge irregularities on the flan, as well as some flan stress and impurities (all fairly common to the issue), this example stands as a stunning specimen, with great detail to the strike remaining and very little actual wear present. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." Aberystwyth in Wales operated briefly as a royalist mint during the Civil War. It struck silver coins from threepence up to half crowns. Wikipedia comments, "From 1639 to 1642, silver coins were minted at Aberystwyth Castle on behalf of the Royal Mint, using silver from local mines. £10,500 in currency was produced." Due to the primitive conditions, many die varieties exist. For the half crowns, the SCWC notes KM 199.1, KM 199.2 (ground below horse), KM 200 (lively horse without ground below, shown here) or KM 201 (king in circle, plume behind). The type is not rare but very scarce in choice condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 15.05 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 200, S-2878; N-2325; Brooker-741-742A (same dies).
