Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52135
SB124-52135 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52135 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1638-42). Aberystwyth Mint; mm: Book. Charles I. PCGS EF-45. A most pleasing example of this elusive type from the Aberystwyth Mint, the present example yields a handsome and appealing complexion, with rich details and only the most limited signs of handling. This example is amongst the more attractive representatives, with good allure and eye appeal throughout. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." Aberystwyth in Wales operated briefly as a royalist mint during the Civil War. It struck silver coins from threepence up to half crowns. Wikipedia comments, "From 1639 to 1642, silver coins were minted at Aberystwyth Castle on behalf of the Royal Mint, using silver from local mines. £10,500 in currency was produced." Due to the primitive conditions, many die varieties exist. For the shillings, the SCWC notes KM 192, KM 193 (inner circle added to reverse but no crown over arms), KM 194 (large value and inner circle added, shown here) and KM 195 (different garnish on shield). The type is not rare but very scarce in choice condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 194, S-2883; N-2331.
