This specimen was lot 2694 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Threepence, ND NGC AU58. Charles I, 1625-1649. Aberystwyth. Mint mark book (1638-42). Little sign of wear on this nicely toned example of a silver coin from the Welsh mint. NGC graded AU-58." This undated threepence is the most available of the denomination of Charles I, despite being a branch mint issue. Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
