Great Britain (1639-40) shilling
This specimen was lot 72324 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1639-40). London Mint; mm: triangle. Charles I. PCGS VF-35. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust left, wearing ruffled collar; XII (mark of value) to right; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee. Somewhat weakly struck on an irregular flan (both aspects that are very common to the type), this survivor nevertheless remains without issue." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
