Great Britain (1625) crown Dav-3761

from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC sale, lot 40309

This specimen was lot 40309 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND. Charles I (1625-49). PCGS VF-35 Gold Shield. Obverse: King on horseback left, inner circle within legend; Reverse: Shield over long cross, with cross tips extending through legend. Toned in even dark gray shades throughout with pleasing detail remaining in the centers as well as around the legends." Spink^[2] lists S-2753 thru S-2762 for the major varieties of this silver crown struck at the Tower mint. After the Civil War erupted, these were also struck at Shrewsbury (S-2925 and S-2926), Oxford (S-2946 thru S-2949), Truro (S-3045) and Exeter (S-3055 thru S-3062). This example is not dated but can be identified as 1625 from the fleur-de-lys mintmark.
