Scotland (1625-34) 60 shillings Dav-3784
This specimen was lot 41536 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCOTLAND. 60 Shillings (Crown Sterling), ND (1625-34). Edinburgh Mint; mm: thistle. Charles I. NGC VF-25. First Coinage. Deep lavender-grey tone with vibrant colorful iridescence glowing from the protected areas. Well centered but somewhat weak at the central obverse, with a remarkable die flaw at the obverse border near 8 o'clock. Only trivial marks noted beneath a glass and the eye appeal remains very strong. From the Loch Ness Collection."
Scottish silver crowns are rare, bullion being scarce and the coin being larger than can be reliably struck by the hammer. Silver crowns of James I (Dav-3783) show up more often. After the Restoration, Charles II would introduce a milled four merks (Dav-3786).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.67 g.
