Great Britain (1625) double crown Fr-247
This specimen was lot 20168 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,112. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Charles I, 1625-1649. Double-crown, ND (1625). Lis. First Bust Double-crown The Brooker Plate Coin Group A, first bust. King left in coronation robes in flat wide jeweled crown; ‘X’ behind. Rv. Crowned square topped garnished arms. Brooker 127 and the plate coin for the variety. Bold portrait details. Some slight reverse weakness is noted, though this is relatively unimportant. Choice for the type. Extremely Fine. Ex: Seaby, 1981; previously Brooker (plate coin), Ryan and Selig collections." This gold double crown (ten shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), unite (Fr-246) and gold crown (Fr-248). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
