Künker Auction 439, lot 2539

This specimen was lot 2539 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €150 (about US$206 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSKLEINMÜNZEN, 20 Pfennig 1875 J. Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Erworben am 4. Juli 2005 von der Hanseatischen Münzenhandlung Bremen. (empire small change, twenty pfennig of 1875, uncirculated.)"

This coin is a silver twenty pfennig struck 1873-77 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J", shown here) mints. It was the smallest silver denomination. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.

Recorded mintage: 3,501,812, a common date.

Specification: 1.11 g, 0.900 fine silver, 16 mm diameter, reeded edge.
