Germany 1875-H 10 pfennig
This specimen was lot 22663 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 10 Pfennig, 1875-H. Darmstadt Mint. Wilhelm I. NGC MS-66+. The sole finest graded example in the NGC census, this superlative Gem exhibits alluring steel gray surfaces highlighted by tremendous brilliance and radiating luster." This coin is an copper-nickel ten pfennig from a type issued 1873-76, 1888-89 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt (mintmark "H", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.
Recorded mintage: 4,268,000, a scarce date despite the large mintage.
