This specimen was lot 74821 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 10 Mark, 1875-H. Darmstadt Mint. Ludwig III. NGC AU-53. Displays limited signs of circulation with well-retained details across smooth, austere gold surface." Of the two major divisions of Hesse, Hesse-Cassel chose the wrong side in the Austro-Prussian war and found herself annexed. Hesse-Darmstadt survived to become the Grand Duchy of plain Hesse. This is the last ten mark issued for Ludwig III, who died in 1877.
