Germany 1875-H pfennig

from Stephen Album sale 41, lot 1586

This specimen was lot 1586 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY: Wilhelm I, 1871-1888, AE pfennig, 1875-H, Darmstadt mint, operated 1872-1882, Unc." This coin is a copper pfennig from a type issued 1873-89 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt (mintmark "H", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. The one pfennig was struck until 1916.

Recorded mintage: 3,516,000 (a scarce date).
