SB825-46799r.jpg

This specimen was lot 46799 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 50 Pfennig, 1875-J. Hamburg Mint. Wilhelm I. PCGS MS-62. From the Dr. Michael Vale Collection." This coin is a silver fifty pfennig from a type issued 1875-77 from the Hamburg (mintmark "J") mint. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This is a slightly better type.

Recorded mintage: 2,411,000, a fairly common date.

Specifications: 2.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-6; J-7.
