Künker sale 352, lot 2239

This specimen was lot 2239 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, HESSEN, Ludwig III. 1848-1877. 10 Mark 1877. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, unified gold coinage of the empire, grand duchy of Hesse, Louis III, 1848-77, ten mark of 1877. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Of the two major divisions of Hesse, Hesse-Cassel chose the wrong side in the Austro-Prussian war and found herself annexed. Hesse-Darmstadt survived to become the Grand Duchy of plain Hesse. This is the last ten mark issued for Ludwig III, who died in 1877.

Recorded mintage: 94,000.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-3786, KM 354, J. 216.
