Künker sale 386, lot 6178

This specimen was lot 6178 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,422 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, HESSEN. Ludwig IV. 1877-1892. 10 Mark 1878. Fast vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse, Louis IV, 1877-92, ten mark of 1878. About extremely fine.)"

Of the two major divisions of Hesse, Hesse-Cassel chose the wrong side in the Austro-Prussian war and found herself annexed to Prussia. Hesse-Darmstadt survived to become the Grand Duchy of plain Hesse. This type was struck 1878-80 and all dates are expensive.

Recorded mintage: 132,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, reeded edge.
