Sincona sale 18, lot 1768

This specimen was lot 1768 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 4,500 (about US$5,929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"10 Mark 1878. Berlin Selten. Vorzüglich-FDC aus Polierter Platte. (grand duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, ten mark of 1878, rare, about uncirculated on a proof planchet.)"

This type was struck 1878 only and is rare. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces.

Recorded mintage: 50,000 plus proofs.
