Sincona sale 18, lot 1740

This specimen was lot 1740 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 425 (about US$560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"10 Mark 1879. Darmstadt Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse, ten mark of 1879, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1878-80. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This type is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 56,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW.
