Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1847

This specimen was lot 1847 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €200 (about US$260 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BADE, Friedrich Ier (1856-1907), AV 10 Mark, 1877 G. presque Très Beau. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1586-1907, gold ten mark of 1877, about Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1875-81 and 1888. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This date is common.

Reported Mintage: 159,330.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold.
