Germany 1877-J 50 pfennig
This specimen was lot 2597 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Kaiserreich, AR 50 pfennig, 1877-J, nicely toned, AU." This coin is a silver fifty pfennig from a type issued 1877-78 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt (mintmark "H") and Hamburg (mintmark "J", shown here) mints. This is a slightly better type. No fifty pfennig were minted between 1878 and 1895. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.
Recorded mintage: 1,337,000 (wreath reverse) plus 1,526,000 of KM-6 (plain reverse).
