UBS sale 85, lot 552

This specimen was lot 552 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$513 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Kaiserreich Württemberg, Königreich Karl, 1864-1891. 5 Mark 1877. Sehr schön." (kingdom of Württemberg, Charles I, 1864-91, gold five mark of 1877. Very Fine.)

After striking silver five mark 1874-76, gold five marks were issued 1877-78. The type does not seem to have been a success, as the denomination was suspended and silver five mark resumed.

Recorded mintage: 488,000.

Specification: 1.99 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 37,11 g.

Catalog reference: J. 291, KM 627, Fr. 3875.
