Wurttemberg 1878-F 5 mark
This specimen was lot 6579 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, WÜRTTEMBERG, Karl, 1864-1891. 5 Mark 1878. Seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, kingdom of Württemberg, Charles, 1864-91, five mark of 1878. Scarce date, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
After striking silver five mark 1874-76, gold five mark were issued 1877-78. The type does not seem to have been a success, as the denomination was suspended and silver five mark resumed. Wurttemberg was the only state to strike gold five mark in 1878.
Recorded mintage: 50,000.
Specification: 1.99 g, 0.900 fine gold, .057 troy oz AGW.
