Bavaria 1878-D 5 mark
This specimen was lot 6168 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,197 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, BAYERN, Ludwig II. 1864-1886. 5 Mark 1878. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (5721084-001). Seltener Jahrgang in außergewöhnlicher Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis II, 1864-86, five mark of 1878. Rare date in outstanding condition, extremely fine to uncirculated, graded NGC MS-62.)"
This type was struck 1877-78 only and is rather scarce. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877-78 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces.
