Sincona sale 46, lot 251

This specimen was lot 251 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$216 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Baden, Grossherzogtum, Friedrich I. 1852-1907. 10 Mark 1876 G, Karlsruhe. Sehr schön. (grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1852-1907, ten mark of 1876, Karlsruhe mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1875-81 and 1888. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This date is common.
