Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1576

This specimen was lot 1576 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, HAMBOURG, Ville libre, AV 10 Mark, 1876 J. Seulement 6321 p. frappées. Rare. Très Beau. (Germany, city of Hamburg, gold ten mark of 1876. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This is the rarest date of a type struck 1875-80 and 1888. Contrariwise, the two mark and twenty mark of 1876 are very common. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Recorded mintage: 6,321.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19.5 mm diameter, decorated edge.
