Baden 1878 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2122 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMANY | Baden-Durlach, Markgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum. Friedrich I. 1856-1907. Kreuzer 1878. Gedenkkreuzer auf die evangelische Kirche in Ladenburg. Vorzüglich. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1856-1907, kreuzer of 1878, for the evangelical church in Ladenburg. Extremely fine.)"
All the minor coinage of the German states was demonetized upon unification in 1871; it is difficult to see how the grand duke expected this coin, struck seven years after unification, to circulate. It may have been sold as a fundraiser for the church.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: bronze, this specimen 3.97 g.
