France SB1115-39122r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39122 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1763. Pau Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-62. Only example at this grade, with a single coin finer (64) at PCGS and NGC. Struck for the semi-autonomous region of Bearn in far southwestern France, an area which was originally annexed by Louis XIII in 1620, but which maintained its own States and Parliament in Pau up until 1789. Coins from this mint feature a different legend than the legends used at all the other mints which struck similar Louis D'Or coinage. The coin offered here exhibits a touch of strike weakness, evident primarily through the hair, but with very few breaks to the luster. A few adjustment marks cross paths in the central area of the reverse, but which do not produce much of a distraction. A terrific MINT STATE example of this elusive gold coin." This is a common date of a common mint for this type, which was struck at that Pyrenean mint 1742-70.

Recorded mintage: 68,607.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-463; KM-522; Gad-346a; Dr/4 № 792a, Dr/2 № 542a.
