Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71421

This specimen was lot 71421 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1763-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. The only example of the date and mint in the PCGS census, this pleasingly toned, choice minor offers great eye appeal." The Bayonne mint struck this denomination 1741-42, 1746, 1748, 1750-52, 1756-57, 1761-70 and was one of the most consistent producers.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-33 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
