Sincona sale 97, lot 1484

This specimen is an écu au bandeau of Louis XV struck in 1763 at the Reims mint. The SCWC lists 1741-45, 1754-55, 1760, 1763 and 1768 but other dates may exist. The long reign of Louis XV (1715-74) saw many coin types come and go. The first part of the reign, while Louis was a child, was a period of monetary confusion and manipulation. The reforms of Cardinal Fleury (1726) stabilized the fiscal situation until the total collapse at the eve of the Revolution. This specimen was lot 1484 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$363 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. Ecu au bandeau 1763 S, Reims. Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. Dunkle Patina. Einige Justierspuren und kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, écu of the hair ribbon of 1763, Reims. Very rare, About Extremely Fine, Dark patina, Some adjustment marks and minor flan flaw.)"

Recorded mintage: 4,980, a scarce date[2].

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter. Engraved by Joseph-Charles Röettiers, this specimen 29.02 g.
