Sincona sale 38, lot 1305

This specimen was lot 1305 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,319 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Louis XV. 1715-1774 2 Louis dor au bandeau 1748 B. Rouen. Vorzüglich. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the ribbon of 1748, Rouen mint. Extremely fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête. This date is surely rare but the type is too expensive for rare dates to obtain much of a premium.

Recorded mintage: 2,613.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. This specimen is 16.33 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 792, Dr/2 № 542, KM 519.4, Gadoury 346. Fr-463.
