Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1391

This specimen was lot 1391 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €480 (about US$616 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or au bandeau, 1748AA, Metz. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or of the ribbon of 1748, Metz mint. Obverse: head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Rare, about very fine.)"

This type was struck 1740-70 and is common as French gold coins go tho this is a scarce date.

Recorded mintage: 13,211[1], a scarce date.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, designed by J. C. Röettiers. This specimen 7,56 g.
