Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1449

This specimen was lot 1449 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €440 (about US$583 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or au bandeau, 1748X, Amiens. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare Frappe faible. Coin de droit rouillé. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the ribbon of 1748, Amiens mint. Obverse: head left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Rare, weak strike, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1740-71 with a face value of 24 livres. While not so common as the 1748-W, this is not a rare date.

Recorded mintage: 25,336[2], but an available date.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen is 8,14 g.
