France 1747BB 2 louis rev DSLR.jpg

This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers but the Strasbourg mint issued this type 1742-49, 1756-64, 1766-72 only. It is one of a series of large issues of 1743-49, probably necessitated by the need to pay French troops fighting in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 180,716.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 792, Dr/2 № 542, KM 519.4.
