This specimen was lot 32150 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV 2 Louis d'Or 1751-A MS64 NGC, Paris mint. The finest graded of its date, one of few Double Louis d'Or specimens to exceed the choice grade level. 1751 is a key date to obtain in the series, one which is missing from all but few collections. This piece is, in a word, sublime; the planchet remains only minorly affected by the adjustment marks so prevalent for issue, its luster complete and scintillating. Louis's portrait is immaculately rendered and without any significant detraction. The finest of the type the cataloger has seen." This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers and the Paris mint issued this type 1742-45, 1751 and 1768-70 but most issues were small. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 1,903[2], a rare date.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
