This specimen was lot 21171 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1730-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. The only Mint State example of the date/mint combination listed on the PCGS population report, tied for finest certified of the date with only two other examples on either NGC or PCGS, both different mints. A well made and pleasing piece exhibiting a bold strike and lustrous satiny surfaces. A tough mint to locate in such high quality certain to pique the interest of the specialist of type collector. Ex: Stack's Auction December 9 & 10, 1992 Lot # 3832 (with lot ticket)." This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime, this date is rare but awarded little premium in Droulers[2].

Recorded mintage: 36,610, a somewhat better date[2].

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge.
