Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1386

This specimen was lot 1386 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €420 (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or aux lunettes, 1731Z, Grenoble. D/ B. drapé à g., tête nue. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or of the spectacles of 1731, Grenoble mint. Obverse: draped bust to left; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre, crown above. Rare, about very fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime, this date is rare but awarded little premium in Droulers[1].

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 8,13 g.
