France 1731-R ecu
This specimen was lot 20423 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1731-R. Orleans Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-63. Attractively toned with minimal evidence of handling and sharp detail throughout the obverse and reverse designs. The single finest graded of the date and mint at NGC and PCGS and a likely candidate for an even higher grade if not for several small planchet imperfections on the reverse." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Orléans mint. Many Orléans mint issues are rare but this one is only scarce. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.
