Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 42195

This specimen was lot 42195 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1726-Z. Grenoble Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-61. A flashy yellow-golden example boasting essentially full luster, with only mild friction and some wispiness through the fields in line with the assigned grade. From the Richard August Collection." This louis d'or aux lunettes is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime altho this is a better date. The other dates from Grenoble (1727-40) are all very rare.

Recorded mintage: 90,840, a scarce mint of a common year.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
