Sincona sale 101, lot 2647

This specimen was lot 2647 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,281 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Louis XV. 1715-1774. Louis d'or aux lunettes 1727 (9), Rennes. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the spectacles of 1727, Rennes mint. Very Fine.)"

This type, introduced in 1726 as part of Cardinal Fleury's coinage reform, terminated the constant financial manipulations which had bedeviled the regency period. Its initial face value was 20 livres, which was raised to 24 livres in May 1726. This date obtains a slight premium over the 1726-A but is otherwise common.

Recorded mintage: est. 65,203.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 8.13 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 800, KM-489.26; Dupl-1640; Gadoury 340, Fr-461.
