Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74360

This specimen was lot 74360 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1726-9. Rennes Mint. Louis XV. NGC AU-55. The finer of just two observed in the NGC census, this glistening example presents a great deal of originality remaining throughout." This louis d'or aux lunettes is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime altho this is a better date.

Recorded mintage: 117,184[2].

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
