SB924-74363r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74363 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1726-X. Amiens Mint. Louis XV. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details. An overall pleasing example of the type from a often elusive mint. Despite the noted tooling, which is pretty common on coins from this time, this piece retains a great deal of originality, especially on the reverse." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Amiens mint. Amiens struck this type 1726-40 and some dates are common, including this one. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 911,938[2].

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
