Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1370

This specimen was lot 1370 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1727E, Tours. D/ B. habillé à g., décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Belle patine. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver écu of the olive branches of 1727, Tours mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, decorated with the Cross of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Nice patina, rare in this quality, Extremely Fine.)"

This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Tours mint. Only the Tours mint issues of 1726-27 are common; the rest are scarce to rare. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. The Tours mint was closed in 1772.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM; this specimen 29,55 g.
