Sincona sale 90, lot 809

This specimen was lot 809 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Flandern, Grafschaft, Philipp IV. 1621-1665. Souverain d'or 1648, Bruges. Vorzüglich-FDC. Knapper Schrötling, sonst überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (Belgium, county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold souverain of 1648, Bruges mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Small flan, otherwise extraordinarily well struck.)"

This type is listed for Flanders for 1625, 1644, 1648-64. Similar lions d'or were struck in Brabant and Tournai. This specimen was offered again as lot 1536 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$2,218 including buyer's fees).

Recorded mintage: 48,000.

Specification: 5.54 g, 0.947 fine gold, this specimen 5.49 g.
