This specimen was lot 832 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €440 (about US$572 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR demi-ducaton, 1648. Deuxième type. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Nettoyé. Beau à Très Beau. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half ducaton of 1648, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, below, the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Very rare, cleaned, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Tournai 1647-51 and superseded an earlier type with a younger bust of the king struck 1623 only. It was also made in Flanders and Brabant and those issues are much more common. Poor strikes and bad planchets are common, tho less so than the half patagons.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.24 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 15,94 g.
