Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 831

This specimen was lot 831 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €260 (about US$338 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1647. Deuxième type. D/ B. à d., avec mince collet. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1647, second type. Obverse: bust right, in plain collar; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, below, the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Tournai 1636-65 and superseded an earlier type with a younger bust of the king (Dav-4450). It was also made in Flanders and Brabant and those issues are much more common. Poor strikes and bad planchets are common, tho less so than the patagons.
