Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 828

This specimen was lot 828 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,601 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV couronne d'or, 1644. D/ Croix à triple nervure, évidée et feuillue. R/ Ecu couronné, accosté de deux briquets couronnés. Très rare. Flan court. presque Superbe. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold crown of 1644. Obverse: voided leafy cross; reverse: crowned arms divides two crowned firesteels. Very rare, tight flan, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Tournai 1622, 1629-33, 1636, 1640-49 and all dates are rare. Similar couronnes d'or were struck in Flanders and Brabant.

Reported Mintage: 22,000 for 1643-44.
